The Dragon Key

My eyes widened, and I could see two forms emerging from the edges of the light, their colors and shapes more beautiful than any of my dreams. One red and one blue, brighter than the energy of my blood and life-force now shimmering around me, but faded in this new light. The two shapes came closer and I saw that they were beings looking at me, elongated snouts with large nostrils sniffing. Their large eyes embraced me, gushes of feeling overwhelming my whole body, and I felt myself vibrating.

With a jolt of excitement, I pushed outward, reaching towards those faces, the warm cocoon cracking and giving way to my efforts. The light poured in from every direction, but all I wanted was to be closer to the shimmering ruby and sapphire faces that were both familiar and mysterious. My heart vibrated with long rhythmic strums, causing my whole body to shake and fluids to fall from my wings, stretching out for their first time. My legs stretched downward and my arms upward, and they looked like they were made of light, reflecting all the colors and shapes around me.

The two heads came swiftly down into contact with my face, pressing against me with a tender embrace that stabilized my little body attempting to hold itself up. Their colors reflected off the mirrors of my own nose, now gleaming in this world of light. The rumble inside my heart burst forth up my spine and my throat, and suddenly a sound creaked forth from my own body, a squeal that was both surprising and joyful.

I looked into those deep eyes as the heads of my Mother and Father pulled back from me a bit, though staying close. I fell forward and caught myself on my front claws, which were just nubs of shimmering chrome. I moved my torso and felt the weight of my wings almost pull me over, and I stretched them out to balance. I could feel the song of the ground beneath my feet, the music of the space around me in the breeze caressing me, the warmth of the star which was still above me. I craned my head back to look up, and between my parents was the same brilliant light, though now far far above me in a field of light blue that matched the belly of my Mother.
